The 45mm Case
Although looks might be deceiving, this IWC Pilot’s Watch replica 3950 has a diameter of 45mm and measures 16.5mm in height. Admitted, it is not as big as the BP Heritage 55mm, but still a watch that you will have to try before you make a decision.
The watch measures 45mm across, but that's not even the real problem here. It’s thickness that's worrisome. At 16mm thick, it is not an easy watch to wear, and the thickness will tend to make it more vulnerable to knocks. If there’s one group of watch collectors that’s particularly forgiving when it comes to case sizes though, it’s IWC collectors. The company’s Pilot replica range has always leaned toward very big watches. This makes practical sense for a real pilot – you can get a quick and clear read of the time – but for most of us it's a style choice rather than a technical necessity.
The Black Dial
One of the main concerns with the watch when it was launched was the balance of the dial, which has the challenge of combining several functions in a space occupied by large numerals and even larger hands. As you can see on the images we took, the dial is extremely legible, even in low-light conditions. The hands are quite big and filled with lume, it is very easy to read the time despite all the white printing on the dial. The register at 12 o’clock shows the recorded hours and minutes from the chronograph (one might assume it is an extra timezone, it is not). The large white second hand is for the fly-back chrono and the small hand in the register at 6 o’clock indicates the running seconds.
The 24-hour hand is black with a red tip. On the picture below, you will see that the preferred timezone is Anchor and it’s between 10:10 or 10:09. The 24-hour hand points to the ’10’ on the 24-hour scale on the dial, telling us it is in the morning (10am). The bezel shows you that Anchor has Daylight saving, hence the small S in front of it.
The Caliber 89630 Movement
The movement boasts replica IWC’s characteristic features: sturdy construction, ratchet winding and a long power reserve of 68 hours. It’s a member of the 89000 caliber family, which was launched in 2007 with the 89360, the first chronograph movement developed entirely in Schaffhausen. The 89365 version also includes a flyback function. Further development to Caliber 89800 integrates a large digital display for the date and the month. Additional complications are found in Caliber 89630 (with perpetual calendar) and Caliber 89900 (with tourbillon). On the other hand, the 89760 movement that’s in our test watch is a practical version that’s well-suited for everyday use. The combination of world time and a chronograph is rarely found on the market.
