Rolex Explorer I 39mm Watch Replica 214270 Reviews - Who wore Rolex Explorer?

Hanks has been wearing Rolex for several decades – including a Seadweller, a GV Milgauss, and a Rolex Explorer I replica. Academy Award-winning actor Matt Damon, is most famous for his role as Jason Bourne in the Bourne Identity series. In real life, Matt Damon is a known Rolex fan and poker player. Today, let's take a look at Rolex Explorer I 39mm Watch Replica 214270.

Case

Originally upsized to 39mm (from the Rolex 36mm 114270 replica) in 2010, I'm a bit mixed on whether or not the Explorer really needed the extra size. On one hand, 39mm is a truly excellent (and still reserved) size for a sport watch. On the other hand, if you've tried on a 36mm Explorer, such as the older 1016 or the more modern 14270, you know just how sweet that size really is. The 36mm feels like wearing an old watch, even if you're picking up a 114270 fresh from the box, that format speaks directly to its lineage and I feel like the impression is good at 39mm, but more powerful at 36mm.

Even at its somewhat larger (but still not all that large) sizing, the Rolex Explorer replica is arguably Rolex's last classic steel sport watch under 40mm. And despite it being one of the less expensive and certainly one of the most minimal offerings in the brand's portfolio, the Explorer still has 100m water resistance with a Twinlock crown, excellent lume, and a case that looks especially svelte when viewed next to the much more burly cases of the modern Submariner, GMT-Master II, or its direct sibling, the replica 42mm 216570 Explorer II.

To my eyes, this 39mm Explorer replica and the current Daytona have the two best cases of any modern Rolex, with neither having been updated to the so-called "maxi" case shape common to other Rolex sport watches. Within that opinion, the Explorer's continued use of this thinner lug case helps to speak directly to its "all killer, no filler" vibe.

Movement

The movement inside the Rolex Explorer I 214270 replica is the Rolex Caliber 3132, the same as in the Oyster Perpetual 39. The only main difference I can find between this and the 3130 in the Submariner “No Date” is that the Explorer and OP both have the “high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers,” while, strangely, the Submariner, with its professional diver’s watch pedigree, does not. You’ll see the Rolex Explorer’s Paraflex shock absorber on the image below. While they all, like every Rolex watch made today, come with the Superlative Chronometer -2/+2 second daily accuracy rating and 5-year international warranty, the OP, Explorer I and Submariner all have 48 hours of power reserve, much less than the 70+ hour extended power reserve that is present with the new-generation Rolex movements dubbed 32xx. More on this in a bit.

Dial

The dial of the Rolex Explorer I replica 214270 now features the blue Chromalight display — essentially BGW9 luminescent material, the sort that lasts longer than the much more common Super-LumiNova C3, but isn’t quite as bright right after it’s been charged with a powerful light source. I much prefer the long-lasting blue hue of Chromalight to the temporary light show of the Super-LumiNova, as seen on Panerais and others.

Regardless of the case size and shape, while the Explorer's dial has evolved, there is still an easy through line from early references like the 6150 to the modern 214270. The deep black dial, the simple and very legible layout, and the recognizable 3, 6, and 9 of the Explorer's dial have persisted for more than 60 years. The rectangular indices for the hours are filled with luminous material, and a large luminous triangle at 12 o’clock provides orientation for reading the time in the dark, although the rhodium-plated digits 3, 6 and 9 have no luminous coating. The rhodium-plated numerals on the previous model were filled with white, non-luminescent paint, giving the dial a more harmonious appearance and improving its legibility in low light. The hands and indices of the new model gleam brightly in the dark, thanks in part to the new Chromalight luminous substance, which debuted on the Sea-Dweller Deepsea replica (an its new D-Blue edition) and is now also used on the Rolex Explorer 1 replica. Unlike on that watch, however, it glows in the traditional, pale green hue rather than a blue one. The luminosity lasts a very long time: the dial remains easy to read even after 11 hours in total darkness.

Crown and Bracelet

The new Rolex Explorer 1 39mm replica 214270 is very user-friendly. The crown is easy to unscrew and has only two positions: one for winding; the other for setting the time. A stop-seconds mechanism stops the balance, immobilizing the hands for easy to-the-second setting. The line under the Rolex “crown” logo on the winding crown marks it as the Twinlock type, which helps make the watch water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters.

The Explorer’s Oysterlock safety folding clasp is distinguished by its ease of operation. A gentle tug with a fingernail opens the protective bow; a second tug on the front part of the clasp triggers a lever mechanism to unlock it. The Easylink lengthening system is very practical, too: concealed inside the clasp is one half of a link, which can be pivoted out without changing the appearance of the bracelet. This five-millimeter extension can be a welcome addition when your wrist expands after a workout or in hot weather.

Top-quality craftsmanship is also evident in the bracelet. Like the clasp, it has a completely satin-finished upper surface and polished flanks, which ensure that it perfectly matches the case. However, compared to the big 39-mm-diameter case, the bracelet tapers to a rather narrow width at the point where it joins its clasp.
