Extreme Lines - Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Master 43mm Chronograph Replica

In the second half of this year, Omega launched a new sub-series - the Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope replica. This series belongs to the brand's popular Speedmaster series, inspired by Omega's double-dial Speedmaster and the characteristics of Omega chronographs in the 1940s.

Six of the seven versions have cases made of stainless steel and feature a classic combination of brushed surfaces and polished sides. Besides, an additional watch is included in the brand's latest proprietary alloy: bronze gold. Today we take a look at one of them, Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Master 43mm Chronograph replica 329.30.43.51.02.002.

The Case & Dial

The case diameter of the new Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope replica is set at 43mm, which is slightly larger than other regular Speedmasters in steel. But it is still the diameter accepted by most consumers. The new product mentioned today is made of stainless steel, with a silver dial and a blackened sub-dial.

The watch features a black anodized aluminum tachymeter bezel, with two subdials on the dial arranged at 3 and 9 o’clock in turn. In addition, the watch uses leaf-shaped hands and Arabic numeral hour markers, both decorated with black, and the Arabic numeral hour markers are decorated with a "spiral" track pattern, which is inspired by the 1940s and is very retro.

In addition, the black-colored dial and matching red hands can be said to be a classic and personalized design. The folding clasp made of stainless steel is decorated with the Omega logo.

What is particularly eye-catching is that the dial of the watch adopts a complex and delicate "snail" design style, and is printed with three different scales, namely the tachymeter scale, the pulse meter scale and the distance measuring scale. Some people also call the Chronoscope watch replica the "strongest" observation watch in active service.

On the outer bezel, you'll find the customary Speedmaster tachymeter scale, with measurements for units from 450 per hour to 60 per hour (generally the tachymeter scale is described as displaying speed over distance, and it certainly can be used for that but you can use it to calculate any units-per-hour measurement). For units less than 60 per hour, there is an additional inner tachymeter scale, which counts down from 55 units per hour to 20 units per hour, using a snail-type scale like those found on some vintage chronographs.

The outermost of the inner scales is a telemetric scale. This is used to time how far away an event is, which is both audible and visible. The classic examples are the time difference between seeing lightning and hearing thunder, and between seeing the flash of an artillery shell and hearing the explosion – and if you find yourself using this scale with any frequency, you're probably leading a more exciting and dangerous life than most of us.

Finally, there is a pulsometric scale. This is used to show the number of pulses (and therefore heartbeats) per minute – one hopes they are the same, anyway, or you may have problems more urgent than that distant thunderstorm. The scale is graduated for 30 pulsations – you start the chrono, and begin counting the pulse beats, up to thirty. When you hit thirty, you stop the chronograph, and read off the pulse/heart rate. If you count thirty pulses and the chrono stops at 60 on the scale, your patient's heart is beating at 60 beats per minute.

The Movement

Inside the case of the copy Speedmaster Chronoscope watch is a new movement, or to be more precise, a new iteration of Omega's Master Chronometer automatic chronograph replica. Based on the calibre 9900, this new 9908 movement is a hand-wound version characterized by its new ¾ plate . However, it retains the same column-wheel and vertical clutch architecture. Also, the double-barrel layout used to provide stable torque – and not so much a longer power reserve -, has been maintained. The watch beats at 4Hz and has a comfortable power reserve of 60 hours.

Like all modern Omega movements, this new calibre 9908 features a co-axial escapement, is Master Chronometer-certified and anti-magnetic to impressive levels. The view through the caseback reveals a large bridge decorated with the classic Arabesque stripes radiating from the centre of the balance wheel. The finishing is typical of Omega's production, clean and pleasant to the eye.

The Bracelet

As mentioned, there are six stainless steel references available in the new Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Replica collection. Each of the three dials is available either on a leather strap, closed by a pin buckle, or a stainless steel bracelet. The design is identical to that of the new Moonwatch, including the thin clasp with a striped pattern. The bracelet measures 21mm at the lugs and tapers to 16mm at the clasp and has polished mid-links. Like the new Moonwatches, the Chronoscope replica is protected by a sapphire crystal.

New to this model, the clasp has a micro-adjustment with a push-and-slide mechanism. It allows a few millimetres of adjustment (about 5mm) for hot summer days. Also, as with the new Moonwatch, Omega has created short end-links, which go down very close to the case and hug the wrist. You’ll be surprised but the models on the bracelet actually wear smaller than their equivalent on leather straps.
